Comcast first dipped its toe into the low-power wide area network (LPWAN) IoT services pool when it announced the machineQ trial venture in October 2016. The core solution is built using LoRa wireless radio frequency technology created by chipset maker Semtech, and has gained worldwide notoriety driven in part by the growing LoRa Alliance. LoRa networks are deployed over unlicensed spectrum in the industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) bands to enable low-power, wide area communication between remote sensors and gateways.

As part of the initial announcement, Comcast said it had created an IoT platform to support the service. Initial returns on the trial networks deployed in Philadelphia and San Francisco were promising, and Comcast recently upped the ante. It has announced machineQ expansion to Atlanta; Baltimore; Boston; Denver; Detroit; Indianapolis; Miami; Minneapolis/St. Paul; Oakland, California; Pittsburgh; Seattle; and Washington DC. Comcast is set to take the LPWAN fight to unlicensed competitors such as SIGFOX and Senet (which also uses LoRa), as well as licensed network providers such as Sprint, Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile, which will compete with LTE-M and NB-IOT offers. Comcast has the enterprise sales and support assets to be formidable in this segment, but will need to prove it can generate strong revenue in a very low average-revenue-per-device environment.
